The Importance of National Planting Week from Our Team Member, Lise

June 8, 2017 | Posted by: Holly Cochrane

Getting your home ready for summer includes your garden and flower beds! Did you know that this week is National Planting Week in Canada? We are taking this week as an opportunity to gain some insight from our one member of our mortgage team, Lise.

Lise and her family own a homestead that includes a bee farm. They have been bee farming for 3 years. They have 10 hives, all with approximately 60,000-75,000 bees per hive. Bees are essential to the health of the environment affecting plants, animals & humans. Therefore, it is important that we all do a small part to keep the population alive. We have found an article that further describes some of the benefits of bees. It also shows ways you can help keep the population on the rise from your own backyard. This article also links to some bee friendly seeds that are free for National Planting Week. Link, here.

Lise’s tips for your garden this summer:

  • “Choose flowers that offer bee benefits – flowers high in pollen & nectar will keep bees fed.”

  • “Try not to use pesticides in your yard. If a bee encounters pesticide while attempting to gather food, it causes a neurological disorder making it appear ‘drunk.’ The bee will become disoriented not be able to find it’s way back to the hive.”

  • “Do not fear bees. Bees will only attack if you are doing harm to their colony. Each bee has a specific purpose and know that when they sting, they die. Therefore, they will only sting if they feel like they are being attacked.”
